LXR Devlog #6 - AR desktop?
Crafting the Perfect AR desktop for LXR
Greetings, INNOvators!
As we navigate the uncharted waters of augmented reality (AR), the importance of a seamless operating system becomes paramount. At INNO, our commitment to openness and flexibility is unwavering.
Instead of reinventing the wheel with a proprietary OS, we've opted for giving you the choice!
Here's a glimpse into our philosophy and the tweaks we're making to ensure an unparalleled AR experience.
Embracing Open Source Roots
In a world populated with proprietary solutions, we stand firm in our belief that the power of open source can drive innovation.
Leveraging existing Linux distribution as our base allows us to tap into a wealth of community-driven support, security, and reliability.
Most of what we propose here is achieved using already existing excellent extensions.
Tailoring the Desktop Environment for AR
While Linux provides a sturdy backbone, the desktop environment demands a nuanced approach to shine in the AR realm. Our focus is on enhancing user experience and efficiency.
Contrast is Key: In the AR landscape, where black serves as the passthrough color, contrast is our ally. A plain black background, as opposed to a colorful photo, ensures optimal visibility of your surrounding and reduces visual noise.
Minimalist UI: Clutter is the enemy of immersion. Our desktop environment features a minimalist UI, with essential elements like time and battery indicators discreetly placed in the top right corner. No distracting panels or docks.
Keyboard-Centric Interaction: Recognizing the keyboard as our primary input device, we've selected a desktop-agnostic keyboard launcher. Invoke the launcher with a special key and it appear front and center on the screen, the support for type prediction and selection of recently launched app allows you to perform your action in few keystrokes. It serves as a central hub for launching apps and actions, promoting usability, performance, extensibility, and aesthetic appeal.
No Floating Windows: In the AR context, the conventional floating window paradigm loses its charm. Our OS adopts a tiling system, allowing application windows to take the full screen or be neatly tiled together for a streamlined, efficient workflow.
App Switching: AR multitasking demands a fresh approach. Drawing inspiration from paper notebooks and tiling window managers, we provide scrollable roll of tiled windows. This innovative solution simplifies the management of multiple apps without the chaos of overlapping windows.
Multi Monitor Magic: One of the killer features of LXR is the ability to benefit from larger screens than any laptop in a compact form factor. But why stop there? Our AR OS supports multiple virtual floating monitors, up to three, available anytime. This opens up new dimensions for productivity and multitasking.
In our pursuit of crafting a better AR desktop environment, we invite your thoughts and insights. Your input fuels our commitment to delivering a cutting-edge and user-friendly AR computing experience.
We’d like to hear from you!
Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to push the boundaries of innovation!
Until next time, keep INNOvating!
